Get Rosterr updates as Discord direct messages (and turn them off)

When the Rosterr bot messages you on Discord, why you might not be getting messages, and how to opt out.

Written by Liam Radford

If your workspace has added the Nebula Rosterr Discord bot, it can message you directly on Discord about things that matter to you.

What you might be messaged about

  • Your leave being approved or denied.

  • (If you can review leave) a new leave request waiting for you. These messages carry Approve and Deny buttons where your workspace has set that up.

  • Being assigned to a session by someone else, and a reminder shortly before a session you are in.

  • A new quota, or a personal goal set for you.

  • A promotion, demotion, warning or termination recorded in the logbook about you.

  • A new email in a Rosterr inbox, if you switched that on for that inbox.

You are never messaged about something you did yourself (for example claiming a slot), and the person who set a quota is not messaged about their own quota.

Why you might not be receiving messages

A message is only sent if all of these are true:

  1. Your workspace has linked the bot (admins do this in Settings > Integrations).

  2. You have a Discord account linked to Rosterr (everyone who signs in through Discord does).

  3. You have not turned DMs off for yourself.

  4. You share a Discord server with the bot. This is Discord's rule: a bot cannot message someone it has no server in common with.

  5. Your own Discord privacy settings allow messages from server members.

  6. The workspace admin has not switched that particular message off.

If one of these fails, Rosterr skips you quietly. It does not affect the action itself (your leave is still approved, for example).

Turn Discord DMs on or off

Open the bell menu and switch Get updates as Discord DMs on or off. It applies to every workspace you are in.

Your messages are private

The bot's messages are sent only to you. Slash commands (such as /quota and /activity) also reply privately, so only you can see the answer. The one exception is /sessions, which posts in the channel so it can be shared.
