Notifications and pings: the bell, phone alerts and what you can switch off

How Rosterr alerts you, how to turn pings on for your phone or browser, and how to choose what pings you.

Written by Liam Radford

Rosterr tells you about things in two ways:

  1. The bell. Every alert appears in the bell menu inside Rosterr.

  2. Pings. The same alerts can also pop up on your phone, computer or browser, even when Rosterr is not open.

Everything in the bell can also ping. The two always agree.

What can ping you

Alerts are grouped into categories you can switch on or off:

Category

What it covers

Leave

Your time-off requests being approved or denied, and requests waiting for you to review

Logbook

Promotions, demotions, warnings and other entries recorded about you

Sessions

Reminders before a session, being assigned to one, and sessions starting

Quotas and goals

A new quota, or a goal set for you

Team updates

Announcements, recommendations and hiring activity

Support replies

Replies from the Nebula Rosterr support team to your chat

A type of alert that is not listed counts as a team update, so every kind can be switched off. Turning pings off never removes alerts from the bell.

Turn on pings

Open Notifications from the bell menu (or your account menu).

  • On your phone (the app): choose Turn on pings on this phone. Your phone asks permission first. If it says notifications are off, open your phone's Settings, enable them for Nebula Rosterr, and come back.

  • In a browser: choose Turn on pings in this browser. The browser asks permission first.

  • On an iPhone without the app: a browser on iPhone only supports pings for web apps added to the Home Screen. Open Rosterr in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, and open it from there. This needs iOS 16.4 or newer.

If you see "Browser pings aren't set up on this server yet", the installation you use does not have them enabled. Ask the Nebula team.

Choose what pings

On the same page, switch categories on or off. The setting applies to all your devices. You can also see every device registered to receive pings, remove any, and send a test ping.

What shows on a lock screen

Because phone lock screens can be seen by other people, Rosterr keeps sensitive things short:

  • Warnings, demotions, terminations and resignations only say that you have a logbook update. The reason and rank are not sent to Apple, Google or the browser maker. Open the app to read the details.

  • Leave decisions, promotions and everything else show their text.

Discord direct messages

Separately, the Rosterr Discord bot can DM you. See "Get Rosterr updates as Discord direct messages (and turn them off)".

Troubleshooting

  • No pings, but alerts appear in the bell. Check that the category is on, that this device is listed under your devices, and that your phone or browser allows notifications for Rosterr. Send a test ping.

  • Pings stopped after signing out. Signing out of the phone app removes that phone from the list on purpose. Sign in again and the app registers it again.

  • Duplicate pings. You may have the browser and the app both registered. Remove one.
