How does activity tracking work?

How Rosterr measures time spent in your game, what is counted (minutes, idle time, messages), and what it does not track.

Written by Liam Radford

Rosterr can record how long your staff spend in your Roblox game. This is called activity. It powers the activity dashboard, the leaderboard, quotas, goals, timesheets and the Staff page.

How the time gets recorded

A small program called the activity package (also called the loader) runs inside your game. Your workspace admin downloads it from Rosterr and adds it to your game. Then:

  1. When a tracked player joins the game, the package tells Rosterr a session has started.

  2. When they leave, it tells Rosterr the session has ended.

  3. Rosterr stores the session and counts the time.

Rosterr never needs the player's password or anything else about them. It only receives the Roblox user ID, the game's place ID, and the start and end of the session, plus chat message counts and idle time.

Who is tracked

Only people at or above the minimum tracked rank that your admin chose in Settings > Activity ("Activity Role: set the minimum rank to be tracked for activity"). Everyone below is ignored. The person must also be a member of the workspace.

What is counted

  • Minutes active: the length of the session, minus idle time if idle time is switched on.

  • Idle time: time the player was away from keyboard. The package marks a player AFK after 2 minutes without moving. If an admin has switched idle time tracking off, idle time is not subtracted.

  • Messages: the number of chat messages sent in your game during the period.

  • Sessions hosted and attended: these come from your Rosterr sessions (the schedule), not from the game.

  • Manual adjustments: minutes an authorised person adds or removes by hand. They show separately so you can always tell them apart.

Live sessions

While someone is currently in your game, their profile and the dashboard show a LIVE marker ("Currently active in game"). A session that has not ended yet adds nothing to the total until it ends.

What is not tracked

  • Private servers and Roblox Studio are not tracked by default. The package prints "Your activity does not track in private servers or Studio". An admin can change this in the package's settings (the privateEnabled option).

  • Anything in games other than the one the package is installed in.

  • Time in sessions that never end (for example if the server crashed before the player's leave could be sent) may be missing until it is corrected with an adjustment.

If Roblox cannot reach Rosterr

The package retries failed requests (default every 30 seconds), and groups requests to stay inside Roblox's HTTP limits, so brief outages normally do not lose data.

Seeing it

  • Your own: Activity in the menu.

  • Someone else's: their profile, if you have permission.

  • Everyone: the Staff page (columns such as Minutes, Idle minutes and Messages) and the Leaderboard.

Periods

Activity is counted in periods. When an admin resets the period, the current numbers are saved to history and counting starts again from zero. See "Reset the activity period (manual and automatic)".
